My dogs front toe nail is gone..?

I have a 1 year old black lab... and the other night we noticed his paw was bleeding ... come to find out .. one of his toe nails is gone..ripped off... he licks it every now and then ..and it doesn't seem as if hes in any pain because he plays and is still wild and he doesn't hold his paw up for any reason... should we take him to the vet or what can we do to take care of it? will he be okay?My dogs front toe nail is gone..?
That happened to my sons dog last summer. Scared us to death and we ran to the vets because she was bleeding.

His dog is a bulldog mix, very active and playful. The vet said she probably ripped it while playing outside. Other than stopping the bleeding, there's not much you can do unless it really looks bad. The vet bandaged her up. That lasted about an hour and she had ripped the bandages off. Just keep it clean, if possible. Easier said than done since they have to go outside.

Ours actually grew a new nail. I was surprised. I didn't think it would grow back but it did.My dogs front toe nail is gone..?
I'd go to the vet.

He might get an infection while playing.
PLEASE take your dog to a veterinarian immediately! Although dogs, like many other animals are very good at masking their pain, i assure you, he is in pain. Several studies have proven that dogs and cats feel pain to the same degree and from the same causes as we do. a ripped nail is excruciating, but due to a dog's pack oriented nature they hide their pain for fear of seeming weak and being attacked or driven out of the pack.

He also needs veterinary care because you just can't put on a topical and a band aid and tell him to keep it clean. dogs and cats tend to lick off topicals that work for humans and ingest it. licking and raw exposure allows a host of bacteria and parasites to enter the wound which can lead to septicemia and severe conditions...

Your dog needs to be examined, and treated with pain meds and antibiotics perscribed by a licensed veterinarian. please, please don't delay... take him in immediately.

He might be ok not going to the vet, but you need to keep a close eye on it to make sure he's not getting it infected. Also, if it doesn't stop bleeding, he'll need to see the vet. To protect his foot so it can heel, it would be good if you had a dog boot you could put on or he'll keep on opening it up and it won't heal.

You should clean it with warm water, then put an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin on it. He should also be kept quiet so it has a chance to heal.
dogs nails can get rippedout sadly :( I'm not sure about treating it only if you have adog save aniceptic that he/ she can't getat and lick ... I'd call a vet and double check ask questions- most likely they will want you to take the dog in though
He probably tore it off while playing. It may or may not grow back. You could put some neosporing ointment on it like twice a day, but he'll probably just lick it off. In the meantime, just watch it, to make sure it doesn't get infected. Best of luck to you.
My Pastor doesn't have a toe nail either, and he's still doing good. Put some anti bacterial ointment an it. If you're worried see a vet.
I'd keep it clean as much as possible, wiping it off every couple hours, and get him to a vet sthe doctor can take a look, just to be safe.
My dogs do this once and awhile also.

Make sure you clean it and keep an eye on it for infection.

As long as there is not swelling or any infection just let it be.

The nail will grow back but may come back strange or only half will grow out. Over time it will return to normal and the dog will be fine.
I think as long as he is acting okay and it is not bleeding anymore he should be fine. just keep it clean and check on it to make sure it does not get infected.
i would take him to the vet to check if it is dirty or infected and i would wash it after he plays to keep his paw clean i think his nail will grow back but he will be fine
please take your pet to the vet. check to make sure he doesnt have any infections or sores in that area. the vet can check to make sure the bloodvessel is okay and nothing else is in there. he can also tell you if the nail will grow back or not.
