Huge Blood blister under big toe nail! Help!?

I was playing basketball with loose fitting shoes and i was running real fast and stopped instantly. This caused my toe nail to hit the toe of my shoe really hard and it instantly caused pain. Within minutes i could see blood surface under the entire toe nail. Now (nearly 12 hours later) it is still throbbing. What should i do? Apply ice? Is the nail going to fall off and if so, how soon? Is it painful? I do NOT want to pierce the nail b/c it hurts too bad right now lol. Any suggestions are helpful!Huge Blood blister under big toe nail! Help!?
I really don't know on this one... Ice is almost always useful and it can't really do too much damage. Alternate ice on and off every 20 minutes and take a regular dose of ibuprofen (advil or aleve) to help with pain and inflammation. I'm not gonna tell you to go to the ER for this because it's probably not a huge deal, but if your in school, go to the school nurse or athletic trainer about it, and if not, if you know any nurses or doctors you may want to ask them about it. Obviously if it starts to look infected or anything you should definitely see a doctor... Good luck!Huge Blood blister under big toe nail! Help!?
You are going to have to pierce the nail. You can do it yourself. Find a very small drill bit. Dip it in alcohol. Twist the drill bit between your fingers while putting in on your toe nail. All you have to do is just break through the nail, so don,t press to hard. Once it goes through the nail you will feel the pain go away. Clean it up and put a band-aid on it and in a while it will heal itself. Pretty simple, done it a lot.
Well, piercing the nail is exactly what you're going to have to do. The blood that is pooling up under the nail is just going to stay there and exert pressure. It's going to throb the entire time. Ice will make you feel better, perhaps, but only while the toe is numb. But do not ice constantly! That can cause necrosis (death) of the tissues surrounding the nail, and further your problems. Just drill a hole in your nail to relieve the pressure. Or get a doctor to do it. Suck it up.. it's not that bad! You will feel better once it is done.
Leave it alone unless it really hurts badly. If there is a lot of swelling, you can possibly get the nail drilled to let the blood out, but usually within a few days the swelling and pain go away on their own, and the blood spot will gradually grow out of your nail over the few months.
keep it elevated. don't touch it {unless with uce, which you should use} try to go to the doctor, they'll tell you whats best. ifthe toe nail does fall off, it could take a while, but it's fall, it will grow back soon enough. good luck and get well soon!
